Eerkes Architects and dHK Architects have revealed plans for Tofino Beach Lodge, a dream retreat on the way to being realized, set within the rugged West Coast of Vancouver Island.
Nestled in the UNESCO Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Reserve and on the traditional territory of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, guests are immersed in stunning natural diversity where they can enjoy the curiosities within shoreline tide pools or marvel at the commerce of squirrels and songbirds in the busy rainforest canopy.
The Lodge and Hotel structures rest on elevated concrete piers with views through the veil of Spruce, Cedars, and Firs. A tapestry of native plants flows under the buildings encouraging surface water patterns to nourish shoreline wetlands.
The material palette of both the lodge and hotel will draw from the surrounding forest and ocean shoreline. In the glass-enclosed lodge, polished concrete floor will take inspiration from beach sand, while exposed beams and wood paneling will add a sense of warmth.
Fireplaces will feature thin vertical concrete flutes that form a bark-like texture. Above the fireplace, Shou Sugi Ban paneling — a traditional Japanese technique that preserves wood by charring it with fire — will mirror tones of the shadowy forest.
Guestrooms and suites will be rendered in lighter shades that draw from the beach. Rooms will include light-stained oak floors with exposed wood paneling and beams, and white oak cabinetry complemented by neutral-toned linen. Moss green accents will appear throughout.
Hidden within the rainforest, the secret garden of the wellness retreat waits. Inside its enigmatic walls, guests are rewarded with a rejuvenating sauna and hot pool set in secluded serenity.
Tofino Beach Lodge is set to break ground in 2025.
