Coastal colors are captured in the butler’s pantry/bar. “The owners wanted a few spaces of restrained elegance and some that were very laid-back and casual…I love having that mix,” designer Jess Weeth explained.
Perched on the banks of Tred Avon River in Maryland’s scenic Eastern Shore, a waterfront estate dating to the 1700s was transformed with a bespoke makeover from Weeth Home. Designer Jess Weeth respected the antique Colonial’s classical elements while infusing it with fresh, clean-lined updates.
“The property and views are truly unbelievable, and there is a lovable, wandering nature in the bones of the house, but it needed so much love,” she stated. “The house had so much character that our goal was to pay homage to the traditional aesthetic but bring it to current standards while using unexpected details and pieces. Though every piece in the entire home was sourced or custom-created by our team, I wanted it to feel like a home that was in the same hands for generations, a place where only the best pieces were kept. The continuous thread adds a dreamy romance to the whole home.”

A new floating staircase in the foyer is highlighted by the reflective texture of plaster walls. “The clients had the vision to push for big changes to the bones, like vaulting ceilings and updating staircases,” Weeth revealed. “This meant adding details that felt true to the home and not too ‘new’.”

In true Colonial fashion, the front-to-back center hall has two doors, this one framing serene river views. “Honestly, all you need to do is look out the doors or windows to be inspired by the water, the foliage and the old brick of the house,” Weeth said.

A misty tree-lined landscape is portrayed in the living room’s wallpaper mural, images that relate to the bucolic local scenery. “There is a feeling of permanence to the property, as if big holidays and milestones could be celebrated in it through the years,” Weeth stated.

Multiple windows frame river views in the kitchen’s dining area. “One of the biggest appeals of the property is its waterfront location near the Chesapeake Bay,” Weeth noted. “We wanted to make sure the outdoor spaces felt connected with the understated interiors while allowing the views to take center stage.”
