1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair returns for its fifth-anniversary edition to New York at Industria, West Village, May 3-5.
The 2019 New York edition of 1-54 will welcome 24 galleries from Belgium, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Ethiopia, France, Ghana, Kenya, Martinique, Morocco, Nigeria, Portugal, Senegal, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States, collectively exhibiting the work of more than 70 artists.
In addition, for the fifth consecutive year, 1-54 New York will be accompanied by 1-54 FORUM, the fair’s acclaimed series of talks and events. The fair’s unique discursive programme, explores convergences across artistic and cultural production, critical thinking and ideas. Accompanying the fair with daily sessions, this year’s 1-54 FORUM is curated by Black Chalk and Co., an artist creative agency founded by Zimbabwean artists Nontsikelelo Mutiti and Tinashe Mushakavanhu. The programme takes its point of departure from Yvonne Vera’s title short story ‘Why Don’t You Carve Other Animals’. Yvonne Vera recognized the potential of the literary text to function as an important means of appropriating, inverting and challenging dominant means of representation and colonial ideologies.
1-54 will be open Thursday, May 2, by invitation only, from 9:00-6:00 p.m., Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4 from 11:00 – 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, May 5, from 11:00-6:00 p.m. Purchase tickets here, and see a full list of forum events here.
