Andrew Joseph: After 40-plus years in the industry, how do you stay creative and inspired?
Bill Baldwin: Two ways: I believe it is such an honor to be invited into our clients’ homes to change how they live in a beautiful space… that excitement always feels brand new. Secondly, to be part of an incredibly talented team and the synergy that comes from that experience still gives me goosebumps. When great design happens, we all can “taste it,” and things come into perfect tune.

AJ: What was the last book you read and how did it inspire you?
BB:A World Appears” by Michael Pollan. It’s a very insightful treatise on the nature of consciousness and consciousness in nature.

AJ: What is your favorite aspect of your job?
BB: I love people and art. Any blend of those two puts a deep smile on my face.

AJ: Can you tell us about a project where you had to incorporate a client’s personal collection into the design?
BB: We have done this a few times, but one that quickly comes to mind: we built an extensive underground library for a software developer and true bibliophile.

AJ: What is your favorite design-related quote?
BB: I come back to this quote often as a good reminder of how we live in our spaces if they are to feed us: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful” -William Morris.

AJ: If you weren’t in this business, what would you be and why?
BB: I would write; nothing is more valuable to me in understanding the why of things.

BB: There is not one thing I would have listened to 😉
