I don’t want to make antiques! I want us to make things that people will use and get rid of the things that they don’t.
If you’ve ever watched Antiques Roadshow, you might recognize, Steven Moore, ceramics expert, and Burleigh’s breath of fresh air as their newest creative director to the 160-year-old company. Aiming to establish relevance in today’s mass production mentality, Moorehas been brought on to draw the parallels between understanding Burleigh’s unique, old-world techniques, and the nuances of the 21st-century home owner. And does he! With clients that boast of society members, heirs, and international diplomats (Prince Charles to name one) Moore intends to make Burleigh a part of the experience that has guided life’s most enjoyable moments in-and-out of the kitchen.
“There are skills at Burleigh that just don’t exist anywhere else,” says Moore. “When I first arrived here last year, it felt like going back to a time when there was a proper craft culture that was valued, unlike in so many other places, where it has completely gone.”
‘I don’t want to make antiques,’ he says. ‘I want us to make things that people will use and get rid of the things that they don’t.
“Who uses a spoon tray? No one. You use a saucer. Spoon trays are made-up Seventies things to have when you’re making spag bol.”
