BoConcept And Morten Georgsen’s New Collaboration Reimagines Outdoor Furniture

As the temperature rises, the design industry is heeding its call to the wild by embracing outdoor furniture. Deck chairs and dining sets al fresco might be known for their durability and resistance to the elements, but they’re seldom stylish. Bridging the gap between form and function is the Cancún collection, which Morten Georgsen designed for BoConcept. For the Danish designer, Cancún eschews expectations of standard outdoor furniture in favor of a practical yet well-appointed collection of 10 pieces—ranging from a lounge chair to a café table, the latter of which is available in two sizes.

“Many designers like to talk about inspiration from nature, [but] our inspiration was the shortcomings in most outdoor designs,” Georgsen says. “We realized that we needed to analyze the market and how outdoor furniture is used in various places and environments.”

Available in a matte green and BoConcept’s classic Ash Grey—two colors that can easily be paired with other hues without reflecting the sunlight—Cancún’s slim profiles offer more than a modern flair.

“One of our main aims was to design a garden furniture set that’s versatile and comfortable for many hours of enjoyment,” says Georgsen. “This means no edgy corners; it’s all rounded, inviting and smooth.”

Construction was not overlooked, as BoConcept and Georgsen chose materials that were both outdoor- and user-friendly. Not only does the aluminum used on the dining chairs resist rust even under tough weather, but it’s also incredibly lightweight.

“We wanted to design a light chair that’s easy to move around,” says Georgsen. “And being stackable was a must: Ready to stack away for the winter and save space in your garden and on balconies.”

According to Claus Ditlev Jensen, BoConcept’s Global Collection & Visual Director, up to eight of the dining chairs can be stacked on top of each other. For extra comfort, the dining chairs, lounge chairs, and sofa available are finished in bouclé-upholstered cushions in a contrasting color.

While ease and portability might be the main goals of the Cancún collection’s chairs, the tables use a galvanized steel to hold their own—regardless of what Mother Nature throws or blows their way. Whether paired together as a set or peppered throughout your backyard, one thing’s for sure: The Cancún collection proves that great style isn’t confined to a home’s four walls.

“As consumers continue to prioritize spending time outside, outdoor spaces are increasingly being thought of as extensions of indoor living spaces,” Ditlev Jensen says in a statement. “We also wanted to bring the colorful spirit of Cancún through with this collection. It’s about taking time out to enjoy life.”

Outdoor furniture that looks and feels like your indoor pieces? Yet another reason to heed your call to the wild.
