Happy New Year! We are ringing in 2023 with a recurring web feature about all things design-related, whether it’s playful, profound, or something in-between. Our inaugural piece shines a spotlight on Danish furniture maker BoConcept’s recent collaboration with style maven KD Reid, plus info about the brand’s inventive New Kollektion. Steen Knigge, BoConcept’s director of marketing for The Americas, gives us a thumbnail sketch of past and present projects, then weighs in on some of his own design preferences.

Gwen Donovan: BoConcept collaborated with KD Reid at the Brooklyn Heights Designer Showhouse last fall, how did that come together?
Steen Knigge: KD has been visiting our showroom frequently to collect samples for projects and photograph material for his social media channels, and we developed a great working partnership. There will be other designer collaborations in the near future, but I can’t share all the good details yet, so I’ll have to leave you with some shock value.
GD: What are some of the similarities between BoConcept’s design outlook and KD Reid’s aesthetic?
SK: KD’s designs are elegant yet sophisticated and modern. He did a fantastic job demonstrating how adaptable our furniture pieces are throughout the Brooklyn Showhouse. Our tasteful design approach emphasizes the soft curved lines of furniture items, which synthesizes well with his creative process.

GD: The New Kollektion embraces form and function in such an artful way, do you have any favorites in that collection?
SK: I have two specific favorites that speak to me. While I love the Berne sofa and pretty much all the items, the Lund cabinet and the Asti desk fill an important need in our line-up. The Lund cabinet gives me a ‘warm’ retro feel, from a time where cabinets were an integral part of your home; the designer Morten Georgsen perfectly captured the modern take on a classic. The Asti desk is a simple and elegant piece, that’ll make my home office efficient yet stylish.
GD: Can you share something about BoConcept that our readers may not know?
SK: Pretty much all our tables, cabinets, sideboards and other wooden products are still produced in our Denmark factory where BoConcept was founded back in 1952.

This Or That? Choose one in each pair that most appeals to you personally.
- Oversized sofa or leather chair? Personally, it’ll be a comfortable leather armchair. It becomes your island where you can relax, unwind and enjoy a great book.
- Upholstery: bouclé or worsted wool? Bouclé is very much in trend, but considering the home situation, such as kids, pets etc., I personally would choose worsted wool.
- Dining table: round or rectangular? If space allows for it, a rectangular table with a great extension mechanism creates space for any party between 4 and 14 guests. A round table works great in smaller spaces when room is at a premium. We have round tables that either fold in half or extend to accommodate more guests.
- Office chair: wheeled or stationary? I’m a wheelie!
