Ever wonder how chefs and bakers would design their own kitchens? For Elaine and Gerardo del Cerro, the owners of Lyon Bakery in Hyattsville, Maryland, structure and style were top of mind.
To update their existing kitchen, the del Cerros turned to Julia Walter, Managing Director of Boffi Georgetown, an Italian kitchen, bathroom and wardrobe firm located in Cady’s Alley, a design district in Washington, DC. While Walter and the owners worked with some existing elements from a 2016 remodel, including the 12-foot-long Calacatta Gold marble island that is especially handy for rolling out pastry, the six-burner BlueStar stove and the wood flooring, they wanted to put a more modern and functional stamp on the overall design.
Walter replaced the former inexpensive white cabinets with Boffi’s striking, three-dimensional walnut veneer doors and drawers that conceal custom built-in storage, including a pullout pots-and-pans drawer with an innovative section to keep lids organized, as well as additional storage for baking and cooking essentials.
Chef-style, stainless-steel counters, reminiscent of the ones the owners have in their commercial bakery, were installed around the stove. Textured, matte-black Domenico Mori tiles on the backsplash create a focal point. Additional details include a slim spice drawer under the stove and a Miele espresso maker built into a coffee and liquor bar.
Now the del Cerros’ kitchen reflects their personal tastes, offers much needed storage, and gives them the space needed for two passionate chefs to whip up their specialties of the house.
