Malene Birger: Creating a New Home in Mallorca Documented by: Jean Marie del Moral & Malene Birger (2021-2025) | teNeues
Malene Birger’s design philosophy is rooted in an eclectic and maximalist approach, where clean lines coexist with 1970s Italian vintage pieces, handcrafted Middle Eastern objects, and her own artwork. This fusion of old and new creates a harmonious balance that is both bold and serene, grounded in history yet forward-looking in its outlook.
In her new book, Creating a New Home in Mallorca, the designer’s work is showcased within a compelling narrative of transformation and timeless elegance. Published by teNeues, this book chronicles Birger’s most ambitious renovation project to date: the restoration of a historic townhouse in Felanitx, Mallorca.
Felanitx is a town of rich history dating back to the 13th century, known for its medieval architecture and proximity to landmarks like the Sant Salvador Monastery. The renovation preserves and celebrates this heritage, incorporating local art and cultural elements and thus creating a space that reflects the values of the community.
“This is about my biggest and most complex renovation yet. It tested me in ways I hadn’t imagined, pushed my creativity to its limits, and at times felt like an impossible feat,” Birger shares. “But we did it. We overcame the obstacles, and in the end, the result is something truly beautiful.”

The book’s cover image captures the moment Birger first encountered the house: “The moment the old wooden doors opened, it was love at first sight.” This sentiment is echoed throughout the pages, where before-and-after photographs illustrate the meticulous process of transformation. The interiors are a testament to Birger’s ability to blend diverse elements into cohesive, inspiring spaces.
