With a desire to replicate the same level of comfort and relaxation they had experienced during multiple stays at the Aman Tokyo hotel, homeowners on the West coast of Canada turned to the design team at Space 9 Interior Design to bring that inspiration to their home in Richmond, British Columbia.
The design team’s minimalist approach took on a very specific direction for this contemporary home. “We deliberately restrained unnecessary decor and colors, instead prioritizing texture and mood,” says Sha Wang, principal at Space 9 Interior Design. “Our aim was to craft a world-class home that embodied comfort, relaxation, and tranquility. The space we created is inviting, exuding a sense of calmness and warmth that welcomes you with open arms.”

Purity, strength, and simplicity were key thoughts as Space 9 created the interior design with the husband and wife, who were born in Hong Kong and Macao, respectively, and each came to Canada when they were young; their two kids and the family puppy in mind. Free from unnecessary ornamentation and distractions, the craftsmanship and high-quality materials throughout the modern space are able to shine.

Having discovered Wang and Space 9 on Instagram, a brief, 30-minute conversation was all it took to solidify their desire to collaborate for this home. “The homeowners’ lifestyle, their cherished travel destinations, and even their preferred hotels aligned seamlessly with my own preferences,” says Wang, who shares the couple’s love of the Aman Tokyo. “It felt as if we were looking into a mirror, reflecting a remarkable harmony between us.”

The modern home allowed for a high level of customization, allowing the design team to align color, texture, and material throughout. “The light and warm palette [features] textured concrete panels [and] white oak that complement each other, and create a very interesting visual geometry throughout the home,” says Wang.

The primary bedroom serves as the ultimate escape for the client, providing a sanctuary from the outside world. Spanning an impressive 800 square feet, the space features a seating/lounge area, a built-in king bed, an office area for work or relaxation, an en-suite bathroom designed with a spa experience in mind, and a spacious walk-in closet. It was designed to provide the utmost comfort and privacy, and to allow the client to unwind and rejuvenate.

The home was a new build that features a two-level layout with an open floor plan. Throughout, the interplay of solid and void spaces, along with careful attention to material selection, contributes to a one-of-a-kind experience that reflects a thoughtful understanding of the psychology of space.
