Andrew Joseph: What is something you hope to see trending in design in the future?
Amalia Graziani: I’d love to see more attention paid to craftsmanship in furniture and building materials. I hope we can move beyond the fast fashion model of furniture consumption. Pieces built to last are precious and contain so much life, carrying owners through many chapters in their lives.

AJ: What was your first job?
AG: I fluffed pillows professionally at Pottery Barn in high school. It still took me almost a decade to realize that I’d have a career building and designing and yes, thinking about pillows.

AJ: Style (or design) icon?
AG: I can’t say I have one, but I do love the way artist Valentine Schlegel brought sculpture into structural design. Her plaster fireplaces are a dream.

AJ: If you had one more hour in the day what would you do with it?
AG: My current project is on a farm in upstate New York. I’d jump to spend more time working on the land there. Any excuse to work with plants and have my hands in the dirt. It’s the ultimate stress reliever, in my opinion.

AJ: Best advice you’d give your teenage self?
AG: Listen to better music! But my real advice would be to know that big changes will be around every corner. I used a lot of brainpower trying to plan my professional trajectory, but a series of surprises sprung up and changed my course. Looking back, I could have had a little more fun and worried less.

AJ: How do you define beauty?
AG: Presence. I’m drawn to that in people and in architecture. In design, I think the way you organize a room is more interesting than what you put into it. There’s an elegance in a piece that takes up more space than is expected. A bold, oversized sofa, sculpture, or tub in an otherwise sparse room is beautiful and makes you interact with an environment differently. I love when a space pushes against what your eye expects.

AJ: Where is the first place you want to travel now that everything is opening up?
AG: My first trip was to Sicily. I went on a road trip through the south and took a lot of inspiration from the building materials there. My next project utilizes a lot of stone and iron, and no one makes better use of these materials than the Italians.
