Designer Friday: An aspire Exclusive Interview With Chinmaya Misra

Chinmaya Misra is the founder and principal of CHINCHIN Design, an interior design studio based in Los Angeles. Originally from India, Chinmaya’s journey to the U.S. and her education at the Southern California Institute of Architecture have profoundly shaped her design philosophy. She views interior design as an extension of her architectural training, embracing a holistic approach that integrates architecture, custom furniture, textiles and art. Chinmaya excels at uncovering the hidden potential in spaces, no matter the size, and blends her clients’ needs with her creative vision through a collaborative process. Her designs are known for their ability to create spaces that feel both joyful and meditative, whimsical yet timeless. See some of Chinamya’s work in today’s Designer Friday.

Andrew Joseph: What inspired you to become a designer?
Chinmaya Misra: Reflecting on my upbringing in India, I realize I was immersed in a rich tapestry of colors, textures and layers of history — elements that, at the time, often went unnoticed. It was an environment I absorbed, more through instinct than awareness.

That environment, however, shaped me in ways I didn’t fully appreciate until later. My passion for design (and architecture) truly blossomed when I came to understand that while I have deep respect for tradition, I don’t feel bound by it in the same way.

Just as modern architecture rises alongside historical landmarks in the layered tapestry of a typical Indian landscape, I’ve come to appreciate the intricate art of layering in design. I find joy in blending diverse elements, celebrating their quirks and idiosyncrasies, and weaving them into a cohesive design narrative that feels both personal and innovative.

AJ: Can you describe your design philosophy in three words?
CM: Not 3 words, but this is my design philosophy: Good design transforms spaces. Great design transforms lives.

AJ: Can you describe a project that you’re particularly proud of?
CM: One project I’m especially proud of is a custom fireplace surround we designed for a client in Los Angeles. For me, no project is too small to deserve my full design attention, and I see every challenge as an opportunity to push creative boundaries. This particular project involved reimagining an existing fireplace, transforming it into something distinctive and far from ordinary.

Drawing inspiration from the entrance of Frank Lloyd Wright’s V.C. Morris Gift Shop in San Francisco, we incorporated layered, tiered arches that lead the eye toward the focal point of the fireplace. The central element is painted a rich charcoal black, creating a striking contrast to the soft, light grey stucco of the asymmetrical arches. The subtle asymmetry is anchored by a sculpted base that flows seamlessly into a custom-built daybed and reading bench, blending form and function in a unique, harmonious way.

AJ: Can you tell us about a design trend you are excited about?
CM: One design trend that excites me is the growing demand for locally sourced, handmade products — especially furniture. This shift puts the maker and craftsman at the heart of design once again. Clients are also increasingly drawn to sustainable materials, which are redefining what luxury truly means today.

AJ: How do you approach designing for different types of clients?
While every client brings their own tastes, culture, background, and budget to the table, they all share one common desire: to be heard and understood. Regardless of who I’m designing for, I prioritize this connection above all else. Of course, some projects present more challenges than others, but my approach remains consistent. I focus on building trust with each client, and once that foundation is in place, the rest falls into place naturally.

AJ: What is your favorite design-related quote?
Frank Chimero from Human Digital, famously stated, “People ignore design that ignores people.” I believe that design goes beyond aesthetics—it has the power to shape experiences, evoke emotions, and forge meaningful connections. People are instinctively drawn to design that reinforces these subtle, yet powerful, bonds.
