Andrew Joseph: Can you describe your design philosophy in three words?
David Mann: My design philosophy, encapsulated in the acronym ECB (Exceptionally Considered Beauty), signifies my unwavering commitment to crafting spaces that seamlessly merge aesthetic allure with thoughtful functionality. Each element is meticulously chosen, reflecting a dedication to creating environments that transcend mere design, embodying a profound and purposeful beauty.
AJ: What is the most important element in a successful interior design?
DM: Establishing trust is crucial in successful interior design. Clients must feel confident in the designer’s ability to understand their preferences and deliver a personalized, aesthetically pleasing space. Trust fosters effective communication and collaboration, ensuring the final design aligns seamlessly with the client’s vision and lifestyle.

Their commercial projects span across a wide spectrum, from chic boutique stores to cutting-edge corporate offices. MR Architecture & Decor’s ability to translate brand identities into physical spaces is truly remarkable.
AJ: How do you approach designing for different types of clients?
DM: I really do try to immerse myself in creating unique interiors that ultimately reflect and nurture my very different clients. I do this through careful listening, a lot of aesthetic conversations, and empathic designing. All of this is then edited with my own open-minded but critical lens.
AJ: Can you tell us about a project where you had to overcome a design challenge?
DM: Very early on in my career, I got a commission to design a retail bank interior on the street level of a skyscraper. We needed to add a mezzanine, but because of the building engineer’s requirements, there would be a lot of tricky structural implications. I remember one very long day of discussions with that engineer—a woman named Svetlana who had a thick accent and rolled her Rs—who kept telling me that we couldn’t overload the “gorazontal members” after the bank made me aware they would need a massive vault on the mezzanine. That evening, I had a very late dinner with a good friend who listened patiently as I related some of the problems I was having with this project. After unloading all this on her, she just said, “David, it’s not your vault!” I needed to hear that. In the end, it all worked out.

David Mann, the founder and owner, has received numerous accolades for his contributions to the industry. His innovative designs have been featured in prestigious publications, and his firm’s work has garnered awards and accolades, solidifying their position as industry trailblazers.
AJ: What is the most important skill for a successful designer?
DM: A successful designer must possess the quintessential skill of being an attentive listener, fostering an open mind, and demonstrating unwavering patience. These qualities enable effective communication, creative collaboration, and the ability to adapt to diverse perspectives, ensuring a comprehensive and successful design process.
