Andrew Joseph: How do you approach a new design project?
Kiley Jackson and Aileen Warren: It really depends on the project, but generally, we begin by assessing the scope of work and learning about the client’s lifestyle. We’ll get a sense of the client’s aesthetic by talking through inspiration images. Then we move into the development of floor plans and other technical drawings before establishing a furniture plan. Once we’re ready to select furnishings we’ll start by rug and furniture shopping with our clients. We like to begin a design scheme with the rug and pull fabric and color inspiration from that base layer. We’ll present furniture and fabric schemes to the client throughout the process, editing and developing alongside them as items are selected, so that they are included every step of the way.
AJ: What is the most important element in a successful interior design?
KJ&AW: We both hold interior design degrees and were mentored by established architecture and interior design firms, so it’s our belief that fundamental design principles like scale, proportion, and balance are paramount in the success of an interior’s design. These principles can be applied to everything from the architecture of a space to the selection of furniture, lighting, and use of color.
AJ: If you weren’t a designer, you’d be a ….?
AW: Definitely a home organizer or landscape architect.
KJ: I would love to flip houses and sell antiques.

This dining room exudes elegance with its bold teal paneling, french provincial chairs, and beautifully crafted Matt Camron rug that anchors the space and ties all the elements together seamlessly.
AJ: How do you stay creative and inspired?
KJ&AW: Through travel! Getting outside of your comfort zone and experiencing new things is the key to staying fresh and inspired.
Particularly memorable and inspiring trips have been Morocco and Mexico City — both of these incredible places are filled with color, culture, and architecture that we love to incorporate in different ways into our work. Also, exploring nature through the national parks in our own backyard can be another great way to draw inspiration for color palettes — nature is not neutral!
When we aren’t traveling, another way we stay creative and inspired is by plugging into Houston’s robust design community — we love getting together over a glass of wine or a good meal with our design contemporaries and sharing everything from sources to challenges within our industry.
AJ: How do you keep up with the latest design trends?
KJ&AW: To keep up with design trends, we’ll lean into our extensive collections of design books, where we find timeless trends that are not just for the grid. There are so many phenomenal designers to learn from, whether they be established or new on the scene. At the moment we’re really inspired by Summer Thorton’s book “Wonderland” and her use of color. We of course look and follow other contemporaries on Instagram, but try not to get too caught up in any buzzy trends, staying true to the timeless interiors we know and love.

This chic home office pairs a statement marbled desk with soft blue walls and built-in shelving, while the elegant antler chandelier from Visual Comfort adds a touch of whimsical sophistication.
AJ: How do you approach designing for a client with a specific style in mind?
KJ&AW: We love when a client comes to us with a specific style in mind. Having a vision for the finished product helps to narrow the field of selections that are made throughout the design process.
Additionally, adhering to a theme can be fun. One of our clients lived in London and wanted to evoke the feel of a British pub into their bar design, which we played up through the use of leathers, tartans, brass touches, and a moody color palette.
AJ: What is something you hope to see trending in design in the future?
KJ&AW: Less indoor/outdoor performance fabrics! Not everything has to be filled with chemicals to make it last. There are some wonderful natural fabrics that wear far better than manufactured ones. We yearn to strip it back to the basics and always choose inherently durable fabrics like wool, mohair, velvets — anything filled with natural fibers that can withstand heavy use but feel so much better to the touch. Not to mention are healthier for us, our families, and the environment.
AJ: What are your ideal weekend plans?
KJ&AW: Weekend away somewhere with a pool, great food, fun people and cocktails!
