What drew you to this locale?
Japan captivates with its rich and intricate history. Kyoto, which translates to “Capital City,” served as the nation’s capital for over a millennium, boasting a stunning array of temples and gardens that inspire awe. Tokyo, the “Eastern Capital,” is a vibrant metropolis that blends cutting-edge culture and architecture with serene, quiet spaces, making it a city of contrasts and boundless energy.

Lodgings…
Tokyo – AMAN:
We indulged in the understated luxury of AMAN, where our suite offered breathtaking views of the Palace gardens stretching all the way to Mount Fuji. The interiors reflect the local aesthetic, featuring natural materials like wood, stone and rice paper. After long days of exploration, the serene pool provided a perfect retreat. On one of our final days, we chose to relax in our suite, enjoying tranquility and private dining in their exquisite Italian restaurant.
Naoshima – Benesse House:
Designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando, Benesse House seamlessly integrates art and nature. Our seaside room was a peaceful haven where we could hear the gentle whispers of the ocean. Being residents granted us exclusive early access to the art galleries, allowing us to immerse ourselves fully in the island’s artistic ambiance.
Kyoto – Ritz Carlton:
Our stay in Kyoto was graced by the elegance of the Ritz Carlton, providing a perfect base to explore the city’s rich heritage.
Kanazawa – Beniya Mukayu Ryokan:
A highlight of our trip, this third-generation ryokan has transformed from a humble one-star hotel to a pinnacle of aesthetic excellence. Their culinary offerings are exceptional, and I believe their restaurant is on the path to becoming one of the world’s top 50, potentially earning multiple Michelin stars. The serene onsen (hot springs) added to the experience, providing a peaceful oasis.
Must-sees for design and architecture enthusiasts…
For design and architecture enthusiasts, Japan is a treasure trove.
Tokyo: Stroll through Ginza to marvel at works by world-renowned architects such as Yoshio Taniguchi, Renzo Piano and Herzog & de Meuron. Omotesandō showcases incredible designs by SANAA, Tadao Ando and Kengo Kuma, complemented by high-end shopping.

Kyoto: The temples are the stars, especially during the fall when the gardens burst into a stunning palette of gold, red and orange. Standing across the lake from the Golden Pavilion, framed by clouds, feels like a glimpse into paradise. Nijo Castle exemplifies the power and grandeur of the Shogun era.
Naoshima: This island is an art lover’s paradise. We spent one night here, taking our time to explore without feeling rushed. Walking and biking around, we encountered installations within historic 19th-century homes. The highlight was the James Turrell-designed house, a sublime sensory experience that leaves a lasting impression.

Postcard moment…
Every moment of this trip was inspiring — from ancient traditions to modern innovations, from street food to Michelin-starred dining. The entire experience took our breath away.

Souvenirs…
We returned with a beautiful early 20th-century Noh mask, now a cherished piece in our home. Additionally, we spent hours at Essence in Kyoto, curating items from Jiun Ho’s shopping list. At Y. & Sons, we had bespoke yukata made, serving as lasting mementos of our journey.
