Flower Power: Sasha Bikoff

Sasha_Bikoff_55Thompson__367Sasha_Bikoff_55Thompson_138Born-and-bred on the Upper East Side, Sasha Bikoff is dubbed the ‘interior designer for the young & wealthy’ by the NY Times and the “go-to decorator for Manhattan’s well-heeled millennial set” by the NY Post.

Her first big project that put her on the map was designing an apartment in the famed Dakota building in NYC previously owned by Judy Garland.

She is also known for finding and sourcing vintage and antique items from around the world which
she reupholsters in couture fashion fabrics like Pucci and Oscar de la Renta and sells on her website.

Her aesthetic is 18th century French Rococo mixed with 1960s Space Age Modern, 1970s French Modernism and 1980s Italian Memphis Milano, which she executes with bright and colorful fabrics and rare antiques.

From a screenplay writer’s “Barbie Dream House” to a “Game of Thrones meets Old New York” theme, Bikoff’s projects are both worldly and eclectic.

As we move into Spring, thoughts always turn to beautiful, colorful, fragrant florals that breathe life into homes and gardens that have been closed up all winter. As the weather turns warmer, what is your favorite botanical to work with and what makes it special?Peonies and lilies. Growing up I was surrounded by all kinds of flowers. I am inspired by blooming peony bushes and the amazing smell of lilies which come in other bright colors like purple and orange rather than just the classic white. They remind me of summer when I was younger and instill a happy, nostalgic feeling.

What is your favorite way to incorporate florals into your design projects and/or your home? Not only do I love adding floral arrangements to a dining room table, coffee or side table but I also love using floral prints in my fabric, furniture and wall coverings. My favorites are a pair of French tufted chairs I reupholstered in an Alexander McQueen floral fabric and a bohemian rattan hooded chair in a Dolce & Gabbana silk zucchini and floral fabric. Just like jewelry adds to a full outfit, flowers add texture, color and natural beauty to any room.
