Maker Monday: An Aspire Exclusive Interview With Haley Weidenbaum

Haley Weidenbaum is an LA-based designer with a knack for designing beautiful, custom drapery, roman shades and woven woods for her clients. After many years of helping residential and commercial clients alike, Haley realized that just about every client needed custom window coverings. Seeing this gap in the market, Haley and her husband founded their own window covering company Everhem. Find out more about Haley and her inspirations in this week’s Maker Monday.

Andrew Joseph: You’re the newest Crayola color. What color are you and why?
Haley Weidenbaum: The most perfect tone of sage green. I don’t think I will ever get over the color green and I also believe it can be used as a neutral. I love how a pale green with a gray undertone pairs well with a variety of palettes and styles. It might be a bold choice but I would choose to paint a room sage green over white any day.

AJ: If you could live in any home in a movie or television series, what would it be?
HW: I was born and raised in LA but I often dream of packing up and moving to a small town, that’s why I have also dreamt of being part of the “Gilmore Girls” fam and living in Stars Hollow. Something about the quaint town and the idea of running a boutique hotel like The Dragonfly Inn makes me want to drop everything and start over.

AJ: What’s your design pet peeve?
HW: When drapery is too short. It ideally should just “kiss” the floor or even puddle a little. Nothing bothers me more than curtains that stop at the bottom of the window (unless it’s purposeful cafe curtains!)

These custom-made wooden woven shades let just the right amount of light in while still offering a sense of privacy.

AJ: What was your first job?
HW: Corporate Sales Coordinator at a large Hotel. In a nutshell, I was booking hotel rooms for the “VIP” and “Corporate” clients. I loved the customer experience aspect of this job but I quickly learned I’d rather design the hotel than work at the hotel.

AJ: What’s your current TV obsession?
HW: I recently watched “The Gilded Age” on HBO Max which is a period piece about America, specifically New York City in the late 1800s. I have always been infatuated by the architecture and interior design of this time and love how this show perfectly captures the aesthetic of this era and transports you there.

AJ: How would you define your work in three words
HW: Comfortable, inviting, and timeless.

AJ: If you had one more hour in the day what would you do with it?
HW: Selfishly, I would probably do a workout. It’s something that I know I need to do but I always leave it as the last thing on my plate or don’t actually get to it at all.

These roman style fabric shaders offer more light-block than the woven shaders. This style comes in both a pleated or flat with a full range of colors, such as this ash essential gray.

AJ: What’s inspiring you in life (in the industry) right now?
HW: As a new and small (but booming) business, I am inspired by all the other companies that are in the same stage as Everhem. I love exploring & learning about other businesses in the design industry that are trying to reinvent or redesign this landscape as well. The innovation and new direction the design world is headed is exciting to be a part of and I love the possibility of collaborating with brands that share our mission of creating space that feels like home.

AJ: Which room in the house do you find yourself working from the most? Why?
HW: Funnily enough the “formal dining room” provides me some clarity and fresh perspective to work. There is something about a perfectly rarely used room, a long table, 10 chairs, and just me sitting there with my laptop that gives me a great deal of focus.

AJ: Has there been a shift in what clients are requesting post-covid?
HW: The focus is on the home more than ever so clients are putting their personal spaces first and foremost. With this shift clients are very invested in making their space feel like home and like to be involved in the process more and more.

About the Maker | Growing up, Haley Weidenbaum spent countless hours reconfiguring the layout of her bedroom furniture, all the while gaining an informal, albeit invaluable education in how best to utilize space. Over time, her desire to design interior spaces grew from a childhood pastime to a burning passion.

After many years of helping residential and commercial clients alike, Haley realized that just about every client needed custom window coverings but were largely clueless on how to make it happen. Haley quickly developed a knack for designing beautiful, custom drapery, roman shades and woven woods for her clients and honed her craft over the years. More often than not, when Haley posted project pictures on her social media accounts, people commented asking “where did you get those drapes?” This was Haley’s “aha moment.”

Everhem’s origin story begins back when Haley and her husband Adam were visiting Stockholm, Sweden. During their time there, they learned that “hem” is the Swedish word for home. They were inspired by the double meaning of the Swedish hem and the English hem for hand-sewn products. As a nod to the lasting quality of our products, “ever” was added and formed Everhem, to mean hand-sewn window treatments that will last forever in your home.
