Maker Monday: An aspire Exclusive Interview With Jordan Mosslar

Jordan Mosslar is the founder of FORM (LA), the Los Angeles-based design atelier renowned for bold yet timeless furniture and interior objects with forms derived from antiquity. From his early days in Brisbane, Australia, Jordan’s innate creativity led him to daydream, sketch, and craft interior spaces. Upon earning his architecture degree, Jordan began his design journey at a local residential firm where he swiftly rose through the ranks and was appointed Creative Director at the young age of 25. Years of unwavering determination enabled Jordan to embark on his journey to Los Angeles, CA where he began working with renowned architect Noah Walker at Walker Workshop. During his time working alongside Noah, Jordan took charge of designing some of the world’s most luxurious residences, collaborating alongside a range of prominent interior designers. Utilizing his knowledge of the industry and deep appreciation for natural stone, Jordan aims to create an ethos of distinct design through his bespoke creations, alleviating the challenges designers encounter when working with this material. Andrew Joseph: What inspired you to become a designer?
Jordan Mosslar: I grew up in a world where my parents were part-time flippers. I was immersed in construction and design from an early age. I was designing floor plans, facades and landscapes as a teenager and my parents really embraced this. As I grew older it became more of a challenge for me to reach higher levels of art & design. I don’t think I will ever feel “there” but it’s something that motivates me to constantly grow and evolve my aesthetic and how I manage my business.

AJ: Can you describe your design philosophy in three words?
JM: Bold, timeless, and cozy.

AJ: Can you tell us about a design trend you are excited about?
JM: Natural stone! I have always been incredibly attracted to the natural beauty found in natural stones. It is such a versatile and timeless material that can really genuinely endure the test of time!

AJ: What design trends do you think will be popular in the coming years?
JM: Mixing stones. I think it’s already started in high-end design, and it won’t take long to trickle down into mainstream interior design trends.

AJ: What is the most important element in a successful interior design?
JM: I think something that makes a design successful is making it livable and functional. I think it’s much harder to achieve a beautiful and curated project that is also functional, comfortable, warm, and livable.

AJ: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received as a designer?
JM: It sounds corny but stay true to what speaks to you. Focus less on outside noise and copycat mentality unless it’s something that truly resonates with you!

AJ: Can you tell us about a specific moment in your career that made you feel accomplished?
JM: This is tough as it’s being trumped weekly, but recently receiving an order from an A-list celebrity that I saw in person many years earlier as a tourist visiting LA! It showed me just how much I had progressed – from living with my parents in Australia to making the move to the US and starting a business.

AJ: What is your favorite place to find inspiration?
JM: Italy! For me there is endless inspiration in that fabulous country. Seeing how they have combined so many natural stones in various patterns and forms has me endlessly inspired for new collections!

AJ: Style (or design) icon and why?
JM: Gio Ponti. He was truly a creative genius, and his design was far beyond time.

AJ: Best advice you’d give your teenage self?
JM: You can do it! Just keep persisting and pushing.
