Andrew Joseph: What inspired you to become a designer?
PS: I don’t think there is any one specific thing that inspired me but rather certain moments. I can remember being in Kindergarten and always wanting to leave class to see the decorations adorning the cafeteria for special events.

Also, when I was ten years old traveling to Lisbon on a family vacation and visiting a well-to-do relatives home. I remember the vivid Turquoise wall color and ornate plaster moldings that stuck in my mind.

KS: The lack of lighting products in the market, which led us to design our first three styles and kick off our own product line.

AJ: Can you describe a project that you’re particularly proud of?
PS: Our Cooper drink tables really define our love of Art Deco but also our ability to combine such diverse materials as metal and shagreen leather. The fact that they’ve been so well received by designers is the icing on the cake!

KS: Our new Conrad coffee table debuting this fall. Once I saw the first prototype, the scale, finish and design, I became very proud of what we had accomplished.

AJ: Can you tell us about a specific moment in your career that made you feel accomplished?
PS: When our first collection of lighting was published in several design publications I felt we really arrived because our peers and editors understood what we were doing.

AJ: What is your favorite design era and why?
PS: Art Deco and Machine Age design is so inspiring because of their simple lines and attention to detail that I love. I probably love this because my mind gets wrapped around the details!

KS: Midcentury, the designs that were coming out at the time were new & fresh. It was a break from the old traditional styles.

AJ: What’s your design pet peeve?
PS: A harp showing on a lamp when it’s peeking out at the bottom of the shade. I’ve always hated this since the first time many years ago when one of our lampshade designers informed us about this. It disturbs me every time I see it in a room photographed.

KS: Something that is overdesigned.
