Ottine Mineral Springs: A Texas Oasis That Delivers On Vibes And Rejuvenation

Just an hour outside of Austin, near the dramatic fan-shaped foliage that defines Palmetto State Park, lies a storied 40-acre site that was once flocked to for its healing, mineral-rich, artesian waters. Long thought forgotten, today, the historic grounds have been revived and reimagined into Ottine Mineral Springs — a peaceful, year-round wellness destination that’s as chic as the waters are therapeutic. It’s a striking reminder that although Texas may be known for its cowboy hats, endless skies, and sultry heat, beyond the well-worn refrains, there is a decades-old tradition rooted in rejuvenation.

While Ottine Mineral Springs is in its infancy — a slate of holistic, transformative experiences is soon to come — it’s already flourishing with discerning explorers who have a knack for tracking down hidden gems. And rightly so — walking into this transportive escape feels like a rare respite from the clamor of everyday life. Nature and design converge to offer a serene, sensorial sanctuary brimming with ways to nourish oneself.

Equipped with one stellar design team led by Vanessa Francis of Francis – Design Studio in collaboration with ownership, Maggie Goen of Goen Buckley Design, Jack Sanders of Design Build Adventure, and Ebbn Milks of Aqua Builders, the immersive retreat is outfitted with five highly-coveted spring-fed mineral pools, including a hot plunge and a cold plunge for those addicted to the invigorating icy challenge. In true Texas fashion, each pool — which ranges in temperature from 40 to 104 degrees — is named after an iconic native plant or tree. The Palmetto Pool — the largest of the five revitalizing bodies of water — is wrapped in striking glazed porcelain tiles from Emser, aptly named Passion. Their vivid hue mirrors the surrounding landscape, imbuing the water with a shimmering emerald glow that heightens its allure. Limestone lueders define the pool coping around the Palmetto and the smaller, adjacent Sage pool — an equally enticing watery oasis.

Nearby, beneath the shade of a sprawling tree, and steps away from a sea of hammocks designed for languid, sun-drenched afternoons, is the Cypress Pool. Along with the Sage Pool, the Cypress Pool ranges in temperature from 86 degrees to 101 degrees. Its atmospheric rock formations and waterfalls contribute to a scene that is so relaxing, it’s nearly impossible to venture away. Surrounding all the pools are eye-catching umbrellas — burnt sienna-toned and green-and-white striped versions — interspersed throughout. Ultra-sleek yet mega-comfortable Akula Sun Loungers in cool shades of green (mesh lounger) and stone contribute to the carefree, leisurely feel.

But deep, curative unwinding is not all Ottine Mineral Springs has to offer. For those who love contrast therapy, the Ivy Pools include the hot pool (101 degrees) and the cold plunge previously mentioned. Its temperature ranges from a not-so-toasty 40–56 degrees — aptly placed next to a welcoming barrel sauna. Terracotta perforated drum side tables from RAD furniture keep to the theme in an attractive Rust colorway that plays off the pebble mosaic tiles — perfect for those who enjoy the effortlessly cool minimalist look. Complementing Palissade Lounge Chairs from DWR in an attractive olive shade offer a respite for those not brave enough to traverse the cold or hot plunges. The sounds of the various waterfalls trickle through the venue, providing a sense of tranquility. The palette — a combination of the nature-inspired shades and orange hues — references the original clay tile roofs of Ottine Mineral Springs’ previous iteration, adding to the relaxing ambiance.

Design aside, the restorative qualities of the waters are well-documented. Their healing legacy dates back to 1909, when a 107-degree artesian spring with a depth of 1,554 feet was discovered. By the 1930s, a foundation had been established, and the spring’s healing properties were utilized to provide relief to children with polio. Today, the artesian well that provides the source taps just as deep into the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer. The Ottine Mineral Springs’ pools are laden with a naturally high alkalinity — featuring a pH of 8.37, with high levels of bicarbonate and sodium, and naturally occurring minerals such as magnesium, chloride, sulfate, carbonate, along with a substantial amount of trace minerals. A soak in any of the pools imparts a silky, soothing sensation on the skin. The combination of magnesium, sodium bicarbonate and salt alone helps ease muscle tension, reduces joint pain, improves circulation, and supports skin health by helping maintain its natural balance. Salt naturally enhances buoyancy, contributing to a feeling of weightlessness that eases pressure on pain points. Soaking in the springs is a truly inspiring way to promote relaxation, relieve stress, and enhance sleep through mineral immersion.

And as all wellness devotees know, locally and seasonally-inspired food and beverage menus are a must. Ottine does not disappoint. Led by Richard Platt of Lockhart’s Loop & Lil’s, the mouth-watering grouping of dishes on offer includes a refreshing medley of salads, wraps, charcuterie boards, and fresh wood-fired pizza options. Fresh-pressed juices (including some seriously tasty kombuchas), tea, sparkling waters, beer, and cocktails wrap up the menu for now, as the team is currently working on a full-service restaurant and bar. And that’s not all Ottine lovers have to look forward to. A retail reception set to be designed by Vanessa Francis (Francis – Design Studio) will include a curated selection of wellness and lifestyle goods. Think lush Turkish towels and plush custom Ottine robes for one. Collaborations with brands such as Far West and Sabah are on the horizon, along with a full-service spa that will open with an expanded, bespoke menu of signature treatments.

Looking ahead, in its next phase of expansion, Ottine will be unveiling charming lodging options with cabins nestled amidst nature, hike and bike trails, and an activities yurt that will host yoga, various wellness workshops, and more. Stay tuned!
