Reimagining Storage Needs Using Curated Designs And Expert Service

California Closets entered the custom closet industry in 1978 when a visionary college student turned his idea of making more space in his dorm room closet into a successful small business. In keeping with their innovative beginning, the Greenwich, Connecticut showroom serves clients whose requirements may range from a small closet to an entire home overhaul. Cheryl Amodeo, a designer in Greenwich, provides stylish space-saving results for any room. “Every design is tailored to fit the client’s unique needs, lifestyle and space. The level of customization is a perfect fit both functionally and aesthetically,” she explains. “I manage the entire process from design to installation for a hassle-free experience.”

Gwen Donovan: When thoughts turn to spring projects, what are some of the most popular solutions you offer?
As we approach spring, many people are reaching out to get a head start on organizing their homes, focusing on projects like garage and mudroom transformations. These spaces are ideal for decluttering and creating functional storage solutions that make everyday life more efficient, just in time for the busy spring and summer months. The common request is dedicated space for shoes and bags, which helps keep the area organized. In garages, hooks for hanging items like tools, sports equipment and outdoor gear are very popular as they maximize vertical storage and make frequently-used items accessible.

GD: What are some of the latest closet trends in terms of colors, finishes and lighting?
The color trends I am seeing now are warm neutrals and earthy tones like beige, taupe and sand, which create a more inviting feel. These are replacing the cooler grays. Also, two-tone design is still a popular request. I love to combine contrasting finishes such as light wood with dark matte surfaces or textured shagreen, leather drawer faces mixed with aluminum elements, which creates visual interest. Our integrated LED lighting, which we build directly into shelves and hanging rods, is a transformative element that elevates the overall aesthetic of any space.

GD: Can you share a recent design project that was memorable?
One recent project that stands out involved transforming a family’s small, underutilized spare room into a multifunctional space to serve as a home office, guest room and gift wrapping/craft area. What made this project particularly memorable was the client’s desire for a seamless blend of function and style. We designed custom cabinetry with pull-out desks, hidden storage for the craft supplies and wrapping paper, and a wall bed that folds down for guests. To tie it all together, we used a combination of soft neutral finishes and sleek hardware, creating a cohesive and inviting look.

GD: What would you like people to know about California Closets?
We offer so much versatility; I can’t repeat that enough! We go beyond designing and installing closets to transform a variety of spaces such as home offices, garages and media centers just to name a few. You can check out these spaces and more at our new showroom opening in Greenwich, Connecticut this spring, it’s going to be spectacular!
