Summer 2018: Beach Destinations

EAST COAST | For a classic Jersey Shore experience with a rock’n’roll twist, stay at The Asbury, which recently debuted the restored, 1960’s Asbury Lanes, a bowling alley turned music venue. If you can tear yourself off the beach in Miami, visit the new Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science or the recently expanded The Bass Museum of Art. Or grab your scuba gear and head to the soon-to-open Underwater Museum of Art in South Walton, Florida – it will be the nation’s first permanent underwater sculpture exhibit. Combine beach time with feasting on crabs at Wylder Hotel Tilghman Island on Chesapeake Bay, which was originally a boarding house. For a taste of old Florida, head to Anna Maria Island and book a stay at the Waterline Marina Resort & Beach Club, the island’s only full-service hotel.

WEST COAST & HAWAII | Head to Carmel by the Sea for a stay at the boutique The Getaway, which has a playful, colorful design. For an easy escape from LA or SF, head to the under-the-radar Cambria Beach Lodge along the central Californian coast, which underwent a complete renovation. If Hawaii is more your speed, try the new Hyatt Centric Waikiki Beach, just steps away from Waikiki’s glistening beach.

MEXICO | Cabo San Lucas is famous for its luxurious resorts and stunning scenery, and the soon-to-open Nobu Hotel will feature Asian-inspired design and its namesake restaurant. Choose from guestrooms, villas or casitas along tranquil Santa Maria beach at the Montage Los Cabos. Further south along the Pacific Coast in Costa Cayeres, which is known for its whimsical architecture, the upcoming El Careyes Club & Residences is tucked among the beach and the jungle. Along the Caribbean coast, the TRS Yucatan Hotel is fresh off a major renovation. The new Tulum Art Club is a combination art gallery, one room hotel and café serving turmeric lattes and cold brew coffee.

AROUND THE CARIBBEAN | If you’ve ever dreamed of staying at an above-water villa, there’s no need to head to the Maldives. Paradise Beach Resort in Nevis opened five new Beach Houses, raised on stilts above the resort’s private beach. Belize is in the midst of a hotel boom. The waterfront Alaia spans 20 acres in the historic town of San Pedro, and the décor at the beachfront Itz’ana Resort & Residences is a mix of vintage and contemporary pieces produced by local artisans.

BAHAMAS & BERMUDA | Bermuda’s newest hotel is the beachfront Loren, and it will be hosting five-course wine pairing dinners all summer. The Other Side is a solar-powered glamping site on quiet Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas. At the other end of the spectrum is the Baha Mar in Nassau, a mega resort with three hotels. Don’t miss the restaurant designed by Philippe Starck, and beers and corn sopes served out of a vintage Airstream.
