As the weather gets cooler and the days get shorter, we’re feeling inspired to add pops of moody colors and playful patterns into our homes. These six design professionals are offering fall color ideas that won’t go stale come winter.
Mary Patton of Mary Patton Design
- Choosing a bold paint color and furnishing the room with neutral furniture and accessories is a great way to implement color.
- A great way to update a dated fireplace is to paint it a fun color. I don’t like an accent wall, but this is a good way to add color to a room without too much commitment.
- Another way is to go monochrome. Pick a color and stick with it throughout the space.
Mel Bean of Mel Bean Interiors
- Reconsider typical fall and winter color choices. I adore the traditional dark and moody colors of fall, but adding vibrant saffrons, slightly muddied blush, and emerald green accents can bring a bright energy to the darker days ahead.
- Don’t forget to reference the colors and textures happening outside your windows! I love to pull the livelier elements into my interiors as we transition to the cooler months.

- When the weather is cooler, the mind typically tolerates visually weightier layers – thicker, nubbier, fuzzier, fluffier. Layering ALL the things might feel like you’re preparing to live in an igloo, but picking one or two cozier elements per room will add just that right touch of hygge.
- For an unexpected color pop, I really lean into the muddy jewel colors: eggplant, cocoa, mustard (you can see I also associate all good things with food!) but in doses with warm whites, putty, bone – those sort of softer, brown-ish whites keep it from feeling too heavy.

- Your window treatments can be an easy and affordable way to switch up your space for the season and add a punch of color to your windows.
- For smaller windows, install shades. They are tailored and clean, and they can be customized in a number of colors to create a cozy space. Ideally, you want a color that closely matches your walls so that the shades blend in when they are down, adding an element of scale. However, for the fall and winter seasons, it is a fun idea to incorporate warmer tones and patterns that still feel light and playful.
- Black can actually be a very cozy color to implement into your space and it’s often overlooked for larger details such as windows.

- Light-colored materials such as bright white blankets, bedding, and soft throw pillows are great additions to a space during the Fall + Winter months. These elements will create a nice cozy layered feel without feeling busy or overwhelming.
- Switch out what you can and embrace the darker days that these months bring. For instance, switch out your summer colors with moody, winter palettes that bring you happiness. Or replace your usual artwork with something that brings you joy – like your family, friends, or fun art!

- Unusual accents and heirlooms can help give a color story major personality.
- Bring bold color onto your walls with a dramatic drapery.
- Forget the accent pillow “pop of color.” Go for it with a bold “bang” of color like an entire cranberry sofa.
