What’s New This Season From Interior & Textile Designer Marika Meyer

Making the leap from decor textiles to loungewear fabrics, Marika Meyer partnered with The Sleep Shirt to launch a luxury sleepwear collection in two patterns and colors for an exclusive line. The Sleep Shirt’s timeless styles pair perfectly with Meyer’s classic textiles for a line of sleep and lounge garments that are ready for holiday gift giving and winter getaways.

Read more about what inspires Meyer’s textile designs, what she has in the works, her new website that brings all things Marika Meyer in one cohesive spot, as well as more about the limited run sleepwear line with The Sleep Shirt.

aspire design and home: What made you decide to start your textile collection?
Marika Meyer: Almost ten years after I started Marika Meyer Interiors in 2007, I launched Marika Meyer Textiles. It’s a combination of my love and passion for painting and my desire to create fabrics that can serve as the foundation for a room. I draw on a lifelong love of classical architecture and antiquities and my study of cultural anthropology to create each textile collection. Inspired by my family’s appreciation of the classics and iconic elements of design, it was an opportunity to turn years of collected imagery into fresh prints in bold, classic colors. A timeless aesthetic expressed in a modern color palette has influenced Marika Meyer Textiles.

adh: How did The Sleep Shirt approach you about a limited-run, exclusive resort collection?
MM: We began our discussions prior to the pandemic, so we had to set it aside to manage all the issues that came with running a business during that time, especially supply chain shortages. Once the pressure eased, we were so happy to revisit the conversation. The Sleep Shirt’s pieces are all about timeless style and everyday luxury, so right off the bat we knew it was a perfect fit!

adh: How does one make the leap from textiles for décor to textiles for sleep and lounge wear? How are they the same, different, and complement one another?
MM: It was a fun process for us to shift our thought process from which patterns suit your home to understanding the patterns and colors that women want to wear. We aimed for colors and patterns that are classic, with shades of blush and blue, but also flattering for women.

adh: What inspires each textile collection, especially the ones used in the sleepwear line?
MM: The two patterns used for The Sleep Shirts, Laurel Leaf and Roman Fig, are part of my first collection, the Sterrett Collection, which was named after my great-great grandfather, JR Sitlington Sterrett, a professor at Cornell University and an expert on all things Greek. He has inspired our family through the years; in fact, his wife Marika was my namesake. The very first Marika Meyer Textiles collection was inspired by our family history, so it’s a particular treat – especially around the festive season – to revisit two patterns from the early days of my brand and see them on these classic shapes by The Sleep Shirt.

Laurel Leaf is our most recognizable pattern from our first collection, so it absolutely had to be part of the collection. It features delicate, coral-toned leaves inspired by the decoration on a 19th-century side chair. We call this color Blush, which is exclusive to the sleepwear. Once that was decided, Roman Fig felt like a perfect complement. In Iceberg, this all-over pattern is more dense and is a lovely alternative for women who prefer a piece that is more saturated with color. Roman Fig was inspired by the intricately carved detail of a Roman temple pediment.

adh: What’s your favorite piece in the sleepwear lineup?
MM: I’m obsessed with the 70s inspired kaftan! It’s effortlessly chic and I can’t wait to incorporate it into my wardrobe.

adh: Where can you purchase The Sleep Shirts?
MM: The Marika Meyer x The Sleep Shirt limited run resort collection is available to purchase online only here. A few pieces will be on display at Evars Collective to-the-trade showroom in San Carlos, California, as well as our Bethesda, Maryland studio.

adh: Do you have a favorite textile collection or pattern to date?
MM: This is such a hard question! It is like choosing a favorite child! I really love all the patterns, but have a special place in my heart for Roman Fig, which was one of the first patterns that I drew. I also love Tree of Life for the historical reference and the way it integrates with so many different colors.

adh: When will your newest textiles launch? Tell us about the patterns, colors, and inspiration.
MM: We are working on the finishing touches of our newest collection, which will launch early next year. It includes a variety of scaled patterns including one that I have been working on for years and am so excited to finally bring it market. This collection is fun and fresh!

adh: You also just launched a new website as well, www.marikameyer.com, that includes both your interior design and textile businesses. How does this newly launched website help tell your story?
MM: We wanted to create a new site that brings together all our products and services under one brand. Our Interior Design team works on projects across the country. We are currently working on homes from New York to Florida to Wisconsin and Hawaii. Because our textiles and rugs are also sold nationally, it made sense to bring the various arms of our business together.
