Designer Friday: An ASPIRE Exclusive Interview With Joe Berkowitz

This week’s #DesignerFriday is Philadelphia design veteran, Joe Berkowitz. Berkowitz has been the head of his business JAB Design Group since he was 24 years old, and has been a trailblazer in the design world ever since its inception. A man who lives life to the fullest, his design career has spanned every kind of interior imaginable, and he’s even earned a win on HGTV’s Showhouse Showdown. See below what Joe had to say about jumping out of planes and following his grandmother’s advice.

This soft, elegant kitchen includes a harmonious mix of lines and light sources.

Andrew Joseph: Most adventurous thing you’ve done in your life?
Joe Berkowitz: Sky diving from 3000 ft. at sunset. A truly incredible experience. The sound of silence I will never forget.

Andrew: If you had one more hour in the day what would you do with it?
Joe: Sleep!! I never get enough of it. A hazard of owning your own business since age 24. If I wake up anytime during the night my mind starts planning my day or designing a project.

Andrew: How do you define beauty?
Joe: Beauty is something that can only be felt with one or all of your senses. The more sensitive you are, the more beauty you will experience in your life.

The inspiration behind this luxury living room crosses several borders, oceans, and eras.

Andrew: Favorite city to recharge?
Joe: New York is definitely my favorite city to recharge. I find all of the energy visually and emotionally stimulating. With its array of interesting people, shopping, restaurants, bars, museums, and design resources — there is no place like it anywhere.

Andrew: Sweet or savory?
Joe: I’m a salt guy. Give me an end cut of prime rib over the most decadent dessert any day!!

Andrew: Your affirmation for today?
Joe: As my grandmother taught me, “You Have to Live While You Live!”
