Designer Friday: An Aspire Exclusive Interview With Kevie Murphy

Kevie Murphy is the founder of K.A. Murphy Interiors, a high-end residential interior design firm. She started her career in law and became a partner at an NYC firm, but her passion for design was discovered during a home renovation project, leading her to study at the New York School of Interior Design. She values both function and beauty in her designs and is driven by her passion, enthusiasm, and ability to connect with people. Kevie believes that a home should be a “memory maker” and draws inspiration from her own life, which includes a husband, 4 kids, and 3 homes that she sees as always changing and works in progress. Learn more about Kevie Murphy in today’s Designer Friday.

Andrew Joseph: If you could live in any home in a movie or television series, what would it be?
Kevie Murphy: Carrie and Big’s apt in Sex and the City – 1010 Fifth Ave. What’s not to love? The Carnegie Hill address? The courtyard? The shoe closet which is the size of a bedroom? Sign me up!

AJ: What’s your favorite cocktail?
KM: Dirty martini – extra cold, extra dirty with a lot of olives – it’s like an appetizer really…

AJ: Are you a good cook? If so, what’s your specialty?
KM: Yes! I took classes at the Institute of Culinary Education (I.C.E.) and my specialty was banana souffle and duo of beef from Daniel Boulud.

AJ: How would you define your work in three words?
KM: Colorful, bespoke, real.

AJ: What are some of the podcasts you listen to and why?
KM: Anatomy of a Murder – despite no longer being an assistant district attorney I really just love all things ‘true crime.’ Each case is so unique and interesting to me!

AJ: Favorite tea to decompress, and in what mug?
KM: Mint tea particularly in the mug that reads – “I’m exhausted from other people being stupid” – because usually when I need to decompress, it’s because of stupid people.

About the Designer | Design wasn’t Kevie Murphy’s first career. Growing up in Port Jefferson Station, New York, Kevie went to Boston University and then attended law school. This led to her working as an Assistant District Attorney in Brooklyn, after which she entered the private sector and became a partner at a New York City firm. It was when Kevie and her husband purchased a Brooklyn Heights home that required extensive renovation, that she realized her passion for interior design.

Everything has brought Kevie to this moment: her passion, her enthusiasm, and her ability to connect with people, which she uses, today, to help make people’s lives better. This starts with her own life: 1 husband, 4 kids, and 3 houses. All of which Kevie sees as “ongoing, always changing, and forever works in progress.”
