Hive Mind: Explore Shakúff’s New Honeycomb Lighting Collection

Luxury lighting brand Shakúff recently introduced their Honeycomb Collection of visually stunning and delicately textured pendant lights. Since 2007, Founder, CEO, and Creative Director Joseph Sidof’s design philosophy has been simple: each fixture is a synthesis of mutual discovery, planning and genesis. As a result, each piece represents a vision that aligns with the client’s. Shakúff’s collections seek to discover and enhance the natural beauty of light, never distorting or overpowering it, an intent clearly reflected in their atmospheric Honeycomb lighting.

Gwen Donovan: The artisanal look of Honeycomb pendant lights is so imaginative, how are they made?
Joseph Sidof: Ambitious in design and construction, each Honeycomb pendant is formed using a custom-made mold and cast glass to ensure consistency. The thicker glass is hand-made; our artists laser-cut the glass to create a diamond-like, faceted shape on the outside that encases the rich, bubbled glass at the center.

GD: Are Honeycomb lights available in different colors?
JS: Yes, the inner design can be crafted in gold leaf to create a honey-colored light or silver leaf for a soothing, modern hue. Honeycomb is also available in black and pastel colors including pink, light blue, peach, light purple, light mint and frost. An LED COB light at the top illuminates the glass Honeycomb pendant, revealing the enticing framework within.

GD: The pendant shades themselves are so unique, please explain the inspiration behind their organic texture.
JS: We wanted to create a lighting collection using a bit more heavy glass and adding some new colors. We created a distinctive diamond-like laser cut glass to represent the natural design of a beehive We also incorporated a chain available in a brass, silver, antique bronze or matte black finish for these pendants to hang from, giving them more of a jewelry vibe.

GD: Where can our readers find out more about Honeycomb pendants and your other lighting collections?
JS: They are welcome to visit our website, shakuff.com, and we also have a showroom in Industry City, Brooklyn where all our fixtures are fully manufactured.

GD: What would people be surprised to learn about your company?
JS: Every piece is crafted carefully by hand. More than an art, we believe glass blowing is a craft. Through dedication and practice, we’ve achieved a process that results in beautiful sculptures of lights. With our experience comes designs that are dependable yet refreshingly unique.

GD: Is there anything else you’d like to share about Shakúff?
JS: We can create fixtures to suit our customers’ different spaces and their different budgets. We love collaborating with designers who bring us their own ideas, and together we achieve a completely new, customized look in lighting.

This or That? Choose one in each pair that most appeals to you personally.

  • Chandelier designs: bold geometric lines or softer, freeform shapes? Softer, freeform shapes. I love that they blend with the space and don’t overtake a room.
  • Clear or embellished glass shades? Clear. It’s all about simplicity although you can still see details in the craftsmanship of the glass.
  • Dimmable lighting, yes or no? Yes! We can change the mood of the room based on your need.
  • Minimalist or maximalist lighting aesthetic? I consider myself a minimalist.
  • Silver or golden finishes? Golden, I’m really drawn more to the warmth of that tone.
