JKA Design Gives A Stick-Style Victorian A Down-To-The-Studs Remodel

Built in 1907, this stick-style Victorian required a down-to-the-studs remodel to better suit its occupants – a young client with an affinity for fashion, art and design, along with her infant daughter. Within the traditional envelope, JKA Design reimagined the interiors to integrate modern gestures, yielding a home where different eras and styles beautifully coexist.

The result is a singular residence for a client whose playful approach is perhaps best epitomized by the incorporation of British Designer Lee Broom’s Hanging Hoop Chair suspended from the 11-foot-tall living room ceiling.

A custom, deep blue/ink museum mohair sofa and custom “salt & pepper” hair-on-hide area rug grounds the room.

Dining Room Area
A bold and edgy chevron flooring — with alternating dark and light wood, in both wide and thick planks — creates a striking dialog with the patterned linen drapery, Ellipse dining table from La Veneta, and vintage 1970s French armchairs from Coup d’Etat.

Dining Area + Kitchen
The open floor plan on the primary floor of the residence showcases JKA’s signature blend of eras and styles; an eclectic mix of Modern gestures, Classical elements, and luxurious materials and details like the custom brass stair rail.

Kitchen
Black & white geometric tiles by Commune for Exquisite Surfaces paired with a custom a range hood and cabinetry in burnished metals are just a few of the features of this energetic, modern kitchen.

Media Room
The deep, rich jewel tones and plush materials (mohair, velvet) are what define this comfortable Media Room — all crowned by a spiral ceiling fixture by Giuseppe Maurizio Scutella for Artemide. Painting by Angela Johal.

Powder Room
This Powder Room might be the smallest space in the home, but it may very well make the biggest, boldest statement of them all with its blood-red custom vanity, Damien Hirst Butterfly Kaleidoscope wallpaper, and stunning Keystone Prunella slab marble countertop, backsplash, and baseboard & floor border.

Primary Bath
A dreamy, light-filled nook was the perfect spot for an equally dreamy Blu-Stone freestanding soaking tub from Blu Bathworks. The geometric side table is from The Future Perfect; custom mahogany vanity with a Calacatta Oro marble top; Calacatta, Emperador, and Nero Marquina marble flooring in a custom geometric pattern; all fixtures from Waterworks.

A geometric mirror above the custom vanity is framed by a pair of vintage 1940s Italian torchiere sconces with naturally patinated brass finish and blown glass; overhead is a vintage flush mount ceiling fixture in brass with tiny perforated pinholes.

Primary Bedroom
Custom linen drapery in a soft, calming pastel color imparts a sense of tranquility to the Primary Bedroom; Philippe Malouin’s Group Cocktail Chair lends a colorful and textural counterpoint to the space. Overhead is a vintage Seguso (Italian) chandelier.

Rooftop Deck
The Rooftop Deck, accessed via a James Bond-like rolling skylight, features a gas fire pit and 360-degree views of the surrounding neighborhood, including a glimpse of San Francisco’s iconic Golden Gate Bridge.
