Maker Monday: John Lyle

John Lyle pieces are conversation starters. That’s because no matter where this New Yorkers’ art is placed, it shines. Whether it be a custom fireplace, a lamp, or a coffee table beyond your wildest imagination, his buoyant personality comes through. Having mastered his take on design, Lyle has appeared in the most elite publications, showrooms, and homes in the world. His designs, like his flashy sense of personal style, are the centerpiece of the room, spread, or show floor he’s taking over. His style icon is Little Edie, he hates marroon, and won’t be seen out without his Converse high tops. If your curiosity is peaked, join me in getting to know the man behind the motifs.

Like something straight out of Narnia, Lyle’s Artis table is a polished bronze fantasy.

Andrew Joseph – What’s your go to bed ritual?
John Lyle –
Wash face, brush teeth and place in jar. I like it really cool when I sleep, otherwise, no sleep.

Andrew – How do you maintain a work/life balance?
John – Is there a difference between work and life?

Andrew – What’s your favorite time of day?
John – All day. I prefer the light to the dark and for some reason, I have convinced myself that if I am looking at a clock and it is 11:11, I should make a wish.

Andrew – Vintage or new?
John – If it is high quality, I can do new.

Andrew – Style (or design) icon?
John – Jackie O, Audrey, Little Edie and John Eason

The Highland bench is coated with orange yacht enamel, fiery and bold, much like its designer.

John – The Dictionary of Cultural Literacy.

Andrew – Best way to take a rest/decompress?
John – A long and strong massage, followed by a hot shower, followed by a long nap. I recommend it.

John – The Metropolitan Museum of art is still my favorite museum, the second favorite is Paris.

Andrew – Least favorite color?
John – Maroon is always at my list’s bottom.

Andrew – Who is your ideal client?
John – This one exists. Kind, generous, appreciative, collaborative, trusting, brave. I have been so very lucky to have quite a few that hit all of these marks.

Andrew – What is one Instagram account you can’t live without?
John – The World of Interiors

You’ve never seen a fire screen quite like the Starburst, fashioned from gray enamel and pure ingenuity.
