Designer Friday: Jonathan Savage

Jonathan Savage is Nashville’s brightest rising design star and shows little sign of slowing down. True to his roots, Savage attended design school near home, took a quick but career-boosting detour to New York, and opened SAVAGE Interior Design’s doors in 2013. In the past five years, he has turned nondescript Nashville homes and businesses into remarkable, intricate spaces. This week, I got a sampling of Jonathan’s southern charm and passion for design. Savage chooses a Tiffany blue and an ivory fur pillow to liven up this master bedroom and office space.

Andrew Joseph – What modern design trend makes you cringe?
Jonathan Savage – Shiplap. Over it. I can’t walk into a friend’s home or restaurant without seeing it. I believe its days are numbered.

Andrew – What are three things you can’t live without?
Jonathan – I can’t live without my pair of Fornasetti chests I use as my bedside tables.
My lucite wine wall that gets me through the days.
My precious Lagotto Romagnolo, Artie.

Andrew – Favorite piece of clothing you own?
Jonathan –
My new reversible Gucci cape.

Andrew – A book that everyone should read?
Jonathan –
A book I think all designers should read is Glamour At Home by Nancy Corzine. The concept of elegance and sophistication reminiscent of the Art Deco period enlivens rooms and exteriors.

Andrew – Favorite city to recharge and why?
Jonathan –
My favorite city is London. The juxtapositions of classic architecture and modern interiors certainly sing my song.

Andrew – Favorite place to view art?
Jonathan –
Tate Modern in London.

Andrew – Best gift you’ve ever received?

Jonathan – A watercolor gifted to me by Albert Hadley, my mentor.

Andrew – What is one Instagram account you can’t live without?
Jonathan –
Whitney Robinson with Elle Decor @whowhatwhit With a flair for the gothic, Savage frames a refined dining room with floor-to-ceiling silver curtains.
