Andrew Joseph: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received as a designer?
Breegan Jane: People who do well in interior design know their value and invoice accordingly. Don’t undersell your time and/or talent when it comes to design projects. Because we designers naturally have a different, creative eagerness, we can oftentimes take opportunities that don’t serve our business. Have a plan and set boundaries/standards as you build your career, and you’ll succeed more quickly in this industry.
AJ: What is your favorite type of lighting to use in your designs?
BJ: I love incorporating lighting that’s overstated and rustic but has hints of glamor. My new lighting line with Savoy is a perfect example of this style. Dynamic lighting with this aesthetic demands visual attention and makes a definitive statement within the overall design of the interior. A traditional room can instantly transform into a modern contemporary space with the right lighting.
AJ: What’s a new hobby/skill that you have learned recently?
BJ: I’ve begun DJing with my kids. It’s an old hobby that feels super new. When I was younger, I was involved with music so much more. Now I’m getting back into it with my sons and utilizing it as a relaxing art form. Plus, as an interior designer who loves curating looks, DJing allows me to curate differently—with music sets and playlists.

Protini blends embroidered King Protea-inspired florals with a poly-cotton texture for a refreshing, harmonious touch in modern interiors.
AJ: What’s your favorite cocktail?
BJ: I used to be a bourbon girl, and I will always love a glass of champagne. But recently I’ve been enjoying dirty martinis. Every strong, sophisticated female character in the movies seems to be a little outspoken and always has a dirty martini in her hand.
AJ: Can you describe a project that you’re particularly proud of?
BJ: I’m extremely proud of my upcoming wallpaper and fabric collaboration with Clarke & Clarke. Each step, from imagined concepts and design sketches to color choices and ultimately seeing the product in my hands, allowed me to do what I love to do: bring a space to life by capturing the feeling of what people want to see in their homes. The products in this collaboration allowed me to pour all of myself and my artistry into these magnificent tapestries, and I am extremely happy with how the pieces turned out.
AJ: How do you approach a new design project?
BJ: I believe artists get the best results when they draw from their passions and find things that truly inspire them. For me, I draw inspiration from my favorite city on earth (Ibiza, Spain), the city where I grew up (Venice Beach, CA), and the country where I do most of my philanthropic work (Kenya, Africa). These places even served as a muse for my new wallpaper line with Clarke and Clarke. The iconic Venice Beach landscape, the teal Ibiza waters and serenity that seems to envelop the island, and the cultural energy of Kenya all put me in a mental and emotional space that brought out so much positivity from within me and inspired me to design. But whether it’s for a client or myself, I lean into how I feel in these geographical places and allow that to stimulate creativity.

Nairobi captures the African horizon with a blend of soft colors, expressive brushstrokes, and dramatic scale in a hand-painted, digital design.
AJ: What’s the weirdest thing a client has ever asked you?
BJ: One client asked me to watch their dog while I did an installation, which…okay, I guess?? Another asked me to make sure I removed their “personal protection piece” hidden inside a mattress while installing a bed.
AJ: Can you tell us about a project where you had to incorporate a client’s personal collection into the design?
BJ: I’ve had to do this while building studio spaces for musicians. Designing for musicians requires a personal understanding of what inspires them creatively, as well as how they interact within the space. Some like to write songs on the floor; others need a piano facing a certain direction. They may also want memorabilia on the walls or particular acoustic installations to create particular sound experiences. Each musician’s space is a very singular and distinct design project.
