Look Inside This Modern Smart Home Nestled In The Colorado Mountains

Nestled among the bucolic mountains of Breckenridge CO, this new construction home emphasizes a warm, modern lifestyle with the use of mindful color palettes, rustic elements, natural light, and layers of texture. The wood and steel finishes highlight the architecture’s clean lines while maintaining the viewers’ interest in the incredible mountainous views. With a balance of personality and marketability, this home was made to impress.

We spoke with Wendy Yates, Creative Director and Founder of Abigail-Elise Design Studio, about her creative process, sustainable practices, and favorite elements in creating this space.

How do you strike a balance between rustic and refined? And what materials were crucial in creating that harmony in this home?
Wendy Yates: Our process is always about balance and finding sustainability in the design. Not just in materials, but in the lifespan of the design. The best tip to help the balance is to do a 2 to 1 scenario. 2 things with heavy texture and movement to 1 refined item. In this case, a clean backsplash and countertop but rustic sawn beams. 2 clean lines low texture 1 organic contrasting color opposite that space.

The flooring was key, as it needed to have a natural feel with its movement but also have consistency in the tones.

How important was it to the homeowners to incorporate smart technology and solar technology in this home?
WY: We think that it can be a great investment to incorporate smart technology and will certainly add value if you are on the higher-end of the market. However, technology is always changing so use a system that can adapt to future upgrades.

If you are buying a home and love smart homes, consider the more implementable products that don’t require a lot of hardwiring.

If you are planning a 6M+ home then definitely go for the integrated home.

We 100% think solar technology is a must if possible to add value do your building part for the environment for any new construction project plus there are a ton of financial benefits. We recommend Go.sunpower.com.

Do those features offer design challenges or are they, in 2020, the only way to do things now?
WY: I believe that it should be the way of doing things, we have a whole series on sustainability and how it really is the new luxury both in interiors, construction and lifestyle.

Favorite design element in the house?
WY: The use of simple but impactful decorative lighting. Every piece was picked for its slight uniqueness. You can do a lot with lighting and it’s my favorite way to change the tone of space after paint and stain.

What do you think the overall vibe of this home is, in terms of the design?
WY: I think it is youthful, but simplistic in its approach to a mountain modern aesthetic. Additionally, it is super functional but smiles at you with classic modern energy and a timeless feel.

What color palettes, styles, materials etc. do you think remain timeless?
WY: The palette was kept neutral but offered classic elements of black (black will always go with everything), but the key I think to timeless is keeping it simple, making the bones interesting but having a backdrop and always having texture somewhere. A stone wall, for example, is great, but tile should be kept neutral and in the largest format available which creates the illusion of more stone and allows for lots of diversity to the other removable interiors. It’s in the ability to add diversity that defines timeless design.
