The Challenges of Working From Home in a Tiny House

Many people that are very passionate about building a sustainable home and lifestyle have gotten attracted to the tiny house movement. For them, it offers the perfect situation in which they can have their own home without a large mortgage and a dramatically reduced footprint.

If you are thinking of doing the same, then you will find loads of encouragement from the tiny house community. However, you must understand that it is a challenge, and if you are working from home in a bid to have a lower impact on the environment, then you will find many unique challenges to deal with.

Working from home is not easy for some and when you are in tight quarters, you must become extra creative with how you manage your office. In this article, I will go over what some of those challenges are and give you some ideas on how to remedy them.

Do an Energy Demand Audit

One of the biggest challenges to running a tiny house built with renewable energy as its primary source is keeping things running. Not all of them are off-grid or even focused on using renewables like solar, but most are. For many people, that’s the sole point.

If you plan to use renewables, then you have to make sure that you account for all of your energy needs that you will incur when adding a home office to the mix. Your all-in-one printers, monitors, and computers will require precise accounting to understand if your system is going to handle it.

Get Creative with Storage

It will come as no shock to anybody that finding where to put your stuff in a tiny house is one of the biggest challenges owners face. However, it becomes even worse when you consider factors like office equipment and document storage.

Have a dedicated space out of the way for your electronic devices like laptops and printers that give you easy access when you need them.

Then, try to digitize as much as possible. Many offices these days are going paper-free because digital documents have taken away the need for paper copies. Scan everything, save them to the cloud, then store your papers off-site to free up precious space.

Even besides finding where to keep your office stuff to free up space, it’s important to not have any clutter. You will lose productivity if you are chasing down what you need because you aren’t organized. Maintain a difference between personal effects and office supplies as much as possible to ensure organization.

Get some Light

Hopefully, your home is bathed in natural light that makes it easy for you to see what you are doing, but also adds to a healthy workspace.

If you don’t have a work area that affords you natural light, then consider installing daylight bulbs. This will go a long way to keeping you alert and energized to get work done on time and the daylight bulbs will help reduce eye strain caused by working in front of a computer in dim conditions all day.
