Inside Cosentino’s Textured Collaboration With Claudia Afshar

Since its founding in 1945, Cosentino has proven time and time again that a surface doesn’t have to be strictly practical. With the help of cutting-edge technology, thoughtful design, and a focus on sustainability, there’s plenty of room for form and function. Leading that careful balance of style and substance is its Dekton Ukiyo collection, which was created in collaboration with interior and product designer Claudia Afshar.

Inspired by contemporary and Eastern design—ukiyo means “to live in the moment”—Dekton Ukiyo experiments with materiality with its ready-to-install fluted tiles, one of the firsts of its kind for the industry. “Playing with texture is timeless, and it is so important in all materials, not just fabric,” Afshar explains. “I have always been inspired by the materials found in nature and making the spaces I design as comfortable, warm, and authentic as possible. Ukiyo is calming yet simplistic, and the colorways and fluting are romantic, but also contemporary and masculine to achieve balance.”

Currently, Dekton Ukiyo has two fluting options to provide an elevated, customizable experience: A wider GV2 style with groves set 25 millimeters apart as well as a GV3 option, which has grooves set 11 millimeters apart. With a matte finish and total of five colorways to choose from—ranging from a dark gray called Bromo to Umber (pictured above), a rich terracotta—it’s possible to select an option that fits with your space.

But while the collection undoubtedly delivers on style, it also receives top marks for sustainability. Made with Cosentino’s signature Dekton material—which is manufactured using 99 percent recycled and reused water as well as 100 percent electric energy from renewable resources—this ultracompact stone is the only cradle-to-grave carbon neutral solid surface on the market.

From covering walls in a foyer to layering tiles around a spacious kitchen island, there is no one way to make the most of Cosentino’s Dekton Ukiyo line. But, as Afshar points out, that’s exactly the point. “Every day I strive to think outside the box in order to create something unique, yet special for each project,” she shares. “This collaboration offers just that, and I am so thankful to the entire Cosentino team for bringing this collection to the market.”
