With a combined half-a-century of experience, husband and wife duo Brett Sugerman and Giselle Loor Sugerman make up the eponymous firm B+G Design. From designing homes all over the country and being recognized all over the world, Brett and Giselle have paved their way in the design community as industry pilots. They have been featured on HGTV and CBS, and additionally highlighted in major publications such as AD Mexico and Luxe Magazine. This year, they are celebrating their 20th year in business with a brand new office steps from Miami Design District and cannot wait to serve their stateside and international clients! Introducing this week’s Designer Friday, B+G Design.
Metallics consume this living space curated by B+G Design. From the fireplace to the console table, this room radiates sophistication, and yet isn’t so chic that you’re afraid to sit on the couch.
Andrew Joseph: Describe your design style as if you were explaining it to someone who cannot see.
B+G: This is a really interesting question. As designers, we rely on the immediate reaction from a client when they see a fabric and select a finish all the way to the final reveal. If we were to describe our design style we would say our spaces are warm and inviting. They feel familiar and comforting, enveloping you into the environment. Our design style is functional where there is a flow to each room that allows you to experience the design naturally while evoking your other senses – from the textures in the fabrics and wallcoverings to the aromatic scents we select for our clients.
Andrew: What would be the name of your debut album?
B+G: Brett is a songwriter and loves to play the guitar. For him, it is another way to release his creativity. In the beginning of the pandemic, Brett actually released two songs on Spotify. The name of his band is Shattered to Atoms – his debut album would be called “Right Now.”
This multifunctional space has everything you need to either stay productive or avoid your workload altogether – including billiards, an office space, and a comfortable sitting area.
Andrew: What’s something you always travel with?
B+G: We always travel with a battery pack. We take so many pictures and videos during our trips that inevitably our phones die. Without this, we would be in dire straits.
Andrew: Best advice you’d give your teenage self?
B+G: We would tell our teenage selves not to worry as much. We have two teenage boys and we know how stressful school and applying to colleges can be. You can get wrapped up in thinking too much about the future and forget about focusing on the present. It will all work out. Oh, and learn more languages. Knowing a second or third language can open so many doors that you would not expect.
Andrew: What were the last 3 things you panic bought on Amazon?
B+G: Like everybody, we were desperately buying masks and hand sanitizer. We are lucky that our industry has kept very busy during the pandemic, but we had to stay fully functional in order to complete installs and site visits while keeping our clients safe. We also invested in different types of lighting for Zoom calls and live chats. We are over-prepared for any type of video conference call now.
The floor-to-ceiling windows allow an ample amount of light to flow through this modern dining room. The unique elements such as the artwork and ornate light fixture truly turn this space into an inviting and invigorating space.
Andrew: What about your design style has shifted this quarantine?
B+G: Overall, comfort has become a central theme in our design, not that it wasn’t before, but clients want to relax and reset at home now more than ever. The need for private space for every member of the family to do homework, work, and take Zoom calls has made our design evolve.
Andrew: Where will be the first place you will travel to after COVID-19?
B+G: Brett and I love to travel. We also travel with our dear friends who are in the industry. It makes trips so much more enjoyable when you get a group together that appreciates design, architecture, and art. Next on our list is Morocco. I’m making room in our new apartment for all the decor we plan to bring back. We are itching to dust off our passports, hopefully in the next six months.
