Andrew Joseph: What is the last book you read?
Maeve Pacheco: One Simple Thing: A New Look at the Science of Yoga and How It Can Transform Your Life. It’s a wonderful book written by a yoga teacher here in New York named Eddie Stern. The book is about the pursuit of happiness and freedom through the connection of the mind and body. It suggests that we can access peace through fostering a greater connection between our mental and physical experiences. This concept resonates with me. I try to be as grounded in my body as I am present in my mind. I find that It helps to create a sense of equilibrium and contentment.
Andrew: What are your beauty secrets?
Maeve: My beauty secret is to try to see myself and others like trees. What I mean is, when we see trees we appreciate them just the way they are. We see different shapes and sizes. We understand that some grew in the sun, others in the shade, some in rocky soil and so on. We don’t judge, we accept that there are reasons for their differences. This is harder to do with people. The mind can come in with criticism. I try to appreciate people’s unique beauty as I do with trees.
Andrew: What’s inspiring you in life (in the industry) right now?
Maeve: I am inspired by artists and designers who incorporate sustainability and regenerative practices into their work. I love to see creators who aim for their practices and products to work in harmony with the natural world. In my own work, it’s important to use ecologically conscious methods and materials. It’s my way of honoring Mother Earth.
Andrew: Who was the nicest person you worked for?
Maeve: I used to have a boss at Anthropologie who always made me feel like I was doing a great job. Receiving that kind of support fostered a lot of creativity. It made me feel as though I could try anything and I wanted to do my best work because I so appreciated her kindness. That’s the power of reciprocity.
Andrew: Favorite app?
Maeve: My favorite app is called breathing app. It is a free app that can help us to reduce stress and enjoy the benefits of a quiet moment. Breathing app helps users to practice resonance breathing. When we slow our breathing down from the typical 15-18 breaths per minute to 5-7 breaths per minute, the nervous system enters a state of equilibrium. After a short time breathing in this way, a sense of calm arises. It’s marvelous!
