Gwen Donovan: What inspired you to create the dazzling array of lighting produced in your studio?
Joseph Sidof: From an early age, I was fascinated by the interplay between light, glass and form. I found that lighting had the power to transform a space, creating a unique atmosphere and evoking emotions. This led me to explore different materials and techniques, ultimately discovering my passion for glassblowing. I wanted to create pieces that not only serve a functional purpose but also act as sculptural art, enhancing the beauty of any environment. Every piece we create at Shakúff reflects this passion and is a testament to our belief that lighting can be more than just a source of illumination – it can be a captivating work of art.

GD: What are the best parts of your job each day?
JS: The best parts of my job are the moments of creativity and collaboration. I love starting the day in our studio, surrounded by the team, discussing new ideas and watching concepts take shape from sketches to tangible pieces of art. Seeing our craftsmen transform raw materials into intricate designs is incredibly fulfilling. Another highlight is connecting with clients and designers, hearing their visions, and working together to bring them to life through custom lighting. Every day presents an opportunity to push boundaries, solve creative challenges and witness the joy our work brings to others.

GD: Do you have a current favorite or two from your lighting collections?
JS: Right now, I’m particularly proud of our Ivy Branch and Aleh Wave designs. The Ivy Branch is inspired by the natural elegance and fluidity of a climbing vine, showcasing a delicate balance between structure and organic form. It brings a sense of movement and life to any space, creating a captivating focal point. The Aleh Wave was inspired by the aesthetic of hanji, a traditional Korean paper patterned with leaves. Hand-crafted skeleton leaves adorn Nimbus pendants that dot a curvilinear wood panel of rich walnut. The piece captures the essence of a gentle ripple, reflecting light in mesmerizing patterns. Both pieces are true representations of our commitment to blending nature and artistry in our designs.

GD: How do you strive to make every client’s experience a positive one?
JS: From the initial consultation to the final installation, we strive to create a seamless and personalized experience for each client. We begin by listening closely to understand their vision and preferences, ensuring that our designs align perfectly with their needs. Throughout the process, we maintain open communication, providing updates and addressing any concerns promptly.
