On Wednesday, October 26, 2022, the Black Artists + Designers Guild (BADG) celebrated their inaugural BADG OF HONOR, an immersive experience, awards ceremony, and fundraiser to celebrate Black imagination at Samsung 837 in New York with National Media Sponsor Interior Design Magazine.
During the awards ceremony, led by MC and BADG Maker Kesha Franklin, five BADG of HONOR award recipients were recognized for honoring their ancestral legacies in art and design, taking ownership of their narrative, and creating spaces to celebrate Black creativity and culture.
- Collective Circle Award: Mashonda Tifrere, Founder of ArtLeadHER
- Education Award: Dr. Dori Tunstall, Dean of Design at OCAD University
- Founder Award: Walter Hood, Creative Director + Founder of Hood Design Studio
- Legacy Award: Franklin Sirmans, Director of Pérez Art Museum Miami
- BADG Maker Award: Jomo Tariku, Industrial & Furniture Designer

All night, guests could engage with BADG’s BLACK JOY auction featuring collectible art + design, experiences, and professional services donated by BADG Makers and supporters; Apparatus, ArtLeadHER, Chantel Walkes, Currey & Company, HBF, Kravet Furniture, Mikel Welch, Modern Antiquarian, and more. Proceeds will support their Mission and Education Initiatives. The auction is live on Charitybuzz through November 10, 2022.

During the ceremony, the guild announced the launch of its second grant. The Creative Visionary Grant is designed for advanced Black professionals in art, architecture, design, and material culture with special attention and focus on decolonizing the field and work that affirms Black Diasporic culture. The grant will provide three winners with $10,000 each for research, production, or other project elements, with one award reserved for a BADG Maker. The submission portal will open on November 1, 2022 with recipients being announced in Spring 2023.
